Nek Chand (Open to read the text)
Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab,
the curry state. It is a clean modern
city born in the 1950s. In
1958 a former roads inspector named Nek
Chand began collecting and using discarded objects - broken toilets,
electrical sockets, bits of machinery - to create a whole fantasy
world. There are waterfalls, passageways
and areas full of figures. The people on the left were covered in
broken up pieces of toilet bowl!
On the right you can see a whole wall
made up of electrical sockets. The
garden is surprisingly large and impressive as much for its weirdness as
its artistic sense.
The
women on the left are covered in old bangles.
The place has a 'Wombles on acid'
feel to it but, it is recognised internationally as being artistically
important. You certainly do get that old 'Only in India' clichéd
feeling while visiting the place. |
